signed "mary e. church florence, italy, 1890" in one volume and "Mary E. Church, Florence, Italy" in the other. Mary E. Church-Terrell (1863-1954), teacher, author, and civil rights leader was teaching at Washington D.C.'s Preparatory School for Colored Youth, when she took a sabbatical to tour Europe and study languages between 1888 and 1890. In the "Epilogue" at the end of volume II, Terrell has put brackets around several lines, including this: "And remember, if you were to choose something lower, and make it the rule of your life to seek your own pleasure and escape from what is disagreeable, calamity might come just the same; and it would be calamity falling on a base mind . . ."
